How Mines multipliers are calculated

Shuffle Mines is a 5×5 board: 25 tiles, of which you choose how many hide mines (1 to 24). Every safe pick raises the multiplier. The multiplier is simply the fair payout for the odds you survived, minus the 1% edge:

multiplier = 0.99 ÷ P(surviving k picks)

With m mines, the chance of revealing k safe tiles in a row is the number of ways to pick k tiles among the 25 − m safe ones, divided by the number of ways to pick k tiles among all 25. With 1 mine and 1 pick, that is 24 ÷ 25 = 96%, so the multiplier is 0.99 ÷ 0.96 = 1.03125x.

Worked example

3 mines, 5 gems revealed. Survival chance: (22/25) × (21/24) × (20/23) × (19/22) × (18/21) ≈ 49.57%. Multiplier: 0.99 ÷ 0.4957 ≈ 1.9974x. So you roughly double your bet about half the time, and the 1% edge is the gap between those two numbers. On a $10 bet the expected loss is $0.10, whatever you choose.

FAQ

+What is the house edge on Shuffle Mines?

1%, for every number of mines from 1 to 24, according to Shuffle's Mines game page.

+Is there a best number of mines?

No. Every combination of mines and picks has the same 1% edge, so none is better in expectation. More mines only means bigger multipliers with lower odds.

+What is the maximum multiplier on Shuffle Mines?

Shuffle lists a maximum of 5,148,297x (24 mines, one safe tile). The max win per bet is capped at $500,000 and the max bet at $20,000, per the help center limits.

+Does the order of picks matter?

No. Only the number of mines and the number of safe tiles revealed matter. Patterns and 'hot' tiles have no effect on a provably fair random board.

+Why do the multipliers in my game differ slightly?

The game may round displayed multipliers. Our figures are the exact 0.99 / probability values; check the in-game table if you see a small gap.
